Who Is It? Birthday Boy Lorenzo Music

May 2, 2018 | by James Greene, Jr.

Beloved voice actor Gerald David "Lorenzo" Music was born on this date in 1937. Most people recognize Music's narcoleptic tongue from his work as Garfield, but Lorenzo gave life to a litany of animated characters, including Tummi on The Gummi Bears and Peter Venkman on Real Ghostbusters. Prior to all that, this Brooklyn-by-way-of-Duluth talent gained notoriety portraying the heard but never seen character Carlton The Doorman on live action sitcom Rhoda. So popular was Carlton that in 1975 Music recorded a novelty single in character; "Who Is It?" was no chartbuster but its soft rock lilt remains endearing.

"Now lately I've heard a few rumors. People are askin' if I drink a lot. Well I'd like to put a end to all those rumors — I drink a lot."

Music, who adopted the name Lorenzo after joining the spiritual movement Subud, passed in 2001 following a bout with cancer. Of course he lives on through his art, particularly this musical Ford era showcase for his scene-stealing gate keeper.
