Memorial Day: John Prine's "Sam Stone" Is a Different Kind of Death Also Worth Remembe

May 25, 2018 | by Jocelyn Hoppa

Memorial Day is a day to remember those who died while serving. Let it also be a day to remember those who came back from serving but still battle their own personal war, one which often results in homelessness, drug addiction and overdoses, and — based on this report from the VA in 2016 — 20 suicides a day.

"Sam Stone" is an obvious and sad reflection of what is still a giant, horrific problem in the U S of A. Sorry to rain on the picnic.
