Weezer Surprises Us With Least Surprising Move — a Mostly '80s Covers Album

Weezer, The Teal Album

January 24, 2019 | by James Greene, Jr.

Hey, remember the '80s? Weezer sure does. Today the world woke up to The Teal Album, Weezer's previously unannounced covers offering that tackles Pac-Man era staples like A-ha's "Take On Me," The Eurhythmics' "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)," and Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean." They throw some curve balls in there, too, like TLC's "No Scrubs" and Black Sabbath's "Paranoid," because why the hell not?

Weezer do their best here to accurately replicate the source material, which always seems like a pointless route to take in covering world famous music. If there's an element missing from TLC's "No Scrubs" it is not the quivering dweeb warble of Rivers Cuomo.

The Teal Album arrives on the heels of the popularity spike Weezer experienced last year covering Toto's "Africa" (yes, their version of "Africa" is on Teal). Check it out on Spotify or Apple Music or dial it all up on Weezer's YouTube channel.
